چکیده

Hip fractures occur more frequently in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) than in the general population [1], and they are an important complication associated with a high mortality rate, decreased quality of life, and large economic burden [2]. The mechanisms of impaired skeletal strength in patients with ESRD are either osteoporosis or renal bone disease, such as adynamic bone disease [2-4]. Old age, female gender, white race, diabetes, and duration of dialysis are also risk factors for hip fractures in patients with CKD5,6. However, few studies have investigated whether different dialysis modalities are risk factors for hip fractures. In addition, few studies have evaluated long-term mortality rates after hip fractures in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and on dialysis. We recently evaluated the the incidence and outcome of hip fractures in 51, 473 patients with ESRD who began dialysis between 1999 and 2005 [7]. The data source was the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, and the patients were followed until death, transplantation, dialysis cessation, or 31 December 2008.

Epidemiology and mortality of hip fracture among patients on dialysis: Taiwan National Cohort Study.

Chronic kidney disease increases the risk for hip fractures. Hip fractures are associated with increased mortality, decreased quality of life, and higher economic burden. To determine whether dialysis modality is associated with a higher incidence of hip fractures in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), we used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to examine the recor...

Is there different risk of cancer among end‐stage renal disease patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis?

Cancer is a global issue in recent decade. Despite this alarming increase in the incidence of cancer, to date, whether the risk of developing cancer differs among peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients is still uncertain. In this retrospective cohort study, data were obtained from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, which provides coverage to almost 99% o...

Early utilization of hypertonic peritoneal dialysate and subsequent risks of non-traumatic amputation among peritoneal dialysis patients: a nationwide retrospective longitudinal study

BACKGROUND The hemodialysis (HD) population has a particularly high incidence of amputation, which is likely associated with decreased tissue oxygenation during HD. However, information about the risk factors leading to amputation in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is limited. Here, we have investigated the association between the use of hypertonic peritoneal dialysate (HPD) and subsequent am...

Increased Risk of Acute Pancreatitis in Patients with Chronic Hemodialysis: A 4-Year Follow-Up Study

BACKGROUND The risk of acute pancreatitis in patients on long-term peritoneal dialysis is higher as compared to the general population. However, the relationship between long-term hemodialysis and acute pancreatitis has never been established. OBJECTIVES We investigated the incidence of acute pancreatitis among patients on long-term hemodialysis in Taiwan to evaluate if there is a higher risk...

Comparative Study of Outcomes among Patients with Polycystic Kidney Disease on Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis

Polycystic kidney disease (PCKD) is the most common hereditary cause of end-stage renal disease, the complications of which may prevent the choice of peritoneal dialysis (PD). The aim of this study was to explore the effects of dialysis modality on outcomes in patients with PCKD. We extracted a cohort of 1417 adult patients with PCKD initiating long-term dialysis therapy in 1999-2010 from the T...
